Queenstown

Queenstown is on the shore of the Z-shaped Lake Wakatipu. William Gilbert Rees was the first European man to live in the area, as he established a farm in what is now the town centre. Although no one is certain how the town came to be named, the most convincing suggestion was that Rees claimed the area was 'fit for Queen Victoria'. The farm in the centre was short lived; however the area still prospered, due partly to a gold rush in the local area.

The town is very popular with tourists - many of whom take part in the many adventure sports on offer. However, one thing that captivates all tourists is the stunning scenery and the magnificent views from the town over the lake and the surrounding mountains. The location has captured the imagination of a number of film directors over the years, as the town and local area has featured in many films. Perhaps the most famous of these is the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy.
