A very varied, enjoyable and full-on programme, with surprise elements. We had excellent informative local and UK guides. The contrast of India and Bhutan worked well together. Darjeeling was charming but the highlight has to hike up to The Tiger’s Nest in Bhutan.

This was undoubtedly one of the best holidays we have ever taken (and we take loads!!) There was a very full and varied itinerary in both countries. Our 4th visit to India was not disappointing. The ambience of each place created a total invasion of the senses and the people are amazing. In contrast, Bhutan was so peaceful: no rubbish lying about here. The scenery was awesome, lots of crystal-clear fast-flowing rivers, beautifully decorated houses, a very happy population who were gracious and friendly to tourists - are but a few of the country’s attributes. Great Rail Journeys provided a super daily programme and their outstanding tour manager, Tracey, ensured everyone was well-informed and stress-free. Add two excellent local guides, 15 friendly travelling companions and the holiday was guaranteed to be successful. We cannot recommend this holiday highly enough. The highlight was undoubtedly the visit to Tiger’s Nest Monastery

This was a fairly full-on tour, with a first-class tour manager and excellent local guides. The most interesting part of the tour involved a journey to various sites in the scenically-wonderful and fascinating Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan. That part of the tour was a life-enhancing experience and would have been well worth 5 stars! My only disappointment was that the tour itinerary made quite a big deal of the preceding journey to Darjeeling on the "steam hauled" Himalayan Mountain Railway, but in actual fact only about 1/3 of the route was covered (using diesel traction and missing out most of the unique engineering features of the line), with only a short journey by steam on a second day. So if you are a rail fan and particularly want to experience all that the unique Darjeeling Himalayan Mountain Railway has to offer, this may not be the best tour for you.
